Choppy market index trading indicator (CMI) Is a simple but effective indicator for the MetaTrader 5 terminal, which determines whether the market is directional (trend in the market) or non-directional (non-trend market).

The rules of a trendless strategy

  • Enter a long position when the 10-bar moving average of the 60-bar CMI is below 40 and the difference between the close of the current bar and the close of 20 bars back is negative.
  • Enter a short position when the 10-bar moving average of the 60-bar CMI is below 40 and the difference between the close of the current bar and the close of 20 bars back is positive.
  • Close when CMI rises above 50.

Trending strategy rules

  • Enter a long position when the 10-bar moving average of the 60-bar CMI is above 60 and the difference between the close of the current bar and the close of 20 bars back is positive.
  • Enter a short position when the 10-bar moving average of the 60-bar CMI is above 60 and the difference between the close of the current bar and the close of 20 bars back is negative.
  • Close when CMI falls below 50.
